From Melissa Kate

As a busy body, I work very hard on multiple projects and that translates directly to a tired mind and in my case, it also directly correlates to a tired body. Between my day job, blogging and the upcoming business ventures, I tend to find little me-time.

But I have since realized that I need to “formally” carve out some me-time in the way of a full body massage at least once a month. My challenge though is that I wanted a great experience without having to drive far out or pay exorbitant amounts of money to get this.

And so I decided to try out The Taj Spa in Westwood Mall in Durban.

It’s a new establishment and while I prefer to be referred to any new beauty businesses rather than wing it, I opted to give it a try.

The outcome?

WOW. The Taj Spa was super clean (big deal for me) and despite being in a shopping mall, the spa itself was quiet and serene with a calming water feature in its foyer. The room itself was bare and dimly lit from the moment I stepped in with clean towels and a therapist who spoke in hushed tones, giving me the relaxing calm I so needed.

The massage itself?

DIVINE! If you want a massage to break the knots in your back – this is not it. This massage was soothing and relaxing, clearing my body, mind and soul. The Eastern music played throughout my massage, proving the authentic Ayurvedic experience. Just when I thought the massage was over, the therapist brings out heated Elakkizhi which are poultice of leaves. This is then dabbed across your back and then massaged throughout. If you like a hot stone massage, this surpasses it in leaps and bounds.

Oh and the Indian Head Massage – oh my soul! Talk about heavenly. Absolutely divine.

Being an Ayurvedic spa, I expected it to be very old fashioned with an overpowering scent of spices but not at all!

I was fortunate enough to have received a complimentary treatment from Verusha the owner of the Taj Spa and she spoiled me with the signature Shirodhara treatment.

This is described as:

Luke warm herbal oil is poured in an even stream on to the forehead to pacify and revitalize the mind and the body. As well as its intense rejuvenating and anti-aging effects, Shirodhara improves memory, addresses other neurological disorders, and normalizes sleep patterns and blood pressure.

I was a bit apprehensive at first because the bed was a different one to the other massage rooms and the device hooked up to expel the oil looked, to my overactive mind, much like a torture device. When the oil starting pouring slowly onto my forehead, the initial feeling was strange. I felt the sensation all the way down to the base of my spine. But soon enough my body acclimated and my mind cleared. The therapist started to gently massage the oil into my forehead and I have no words for what followed – I felt almost transported out of my body. I warn you though – this is a messy treatment. The oil is drenched into your hair so expect to go straight home afterwards. Truly an experience if you’re in need of deep relaxation.

In my opinion, one of the best spas in Durban and they aren’t badly priced too!
